Complete post-earthquake rehabilitation of the largest economic school in Croatia

19. Dec 2023
In Zagreb, we are carrying out work on the complete post-earthquake rehabilitation and reconstruction of the largest economic school in Croatia - Prva ekonomika škola Zagreb at Medulićeva 33.

The building is part of the Zagreb earthquake reconstruction fund, as it was severely damaged in the 2020 earthquake. The building was originally built in 1892 and is under the protection of cultural heritage. For this reason, the renovation of the building is extremely demanding, as it is necessary to preserve the original appearance of the school. With four floors on 7,000 m2, it is the largest economic school in Croatia.

After an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.5 on the Richter scale, it was found that the most damaged was the building's ceiling structure and load-bearing walls. As part of the comprehensive renovation, the project envisages a complete constructive rehabilitation of the building and its improvement to the level of earthquake resistance.

The rehabilitation is carried out throughout the entire building vertically from the foundation to the roof and horizontally in all mezzanine panels. Complete renovation of floors, walls, ceilings, interior and exterior joinery and facade is also planned. Constructive rehabilitation of the foundations is carried out by extending the existing foundations by 20 cm, the walls in the basement are concreted by 20 cm, and the foundation slabs are made new with a thickness of 25 cm.

Visible cracks on the walls are injected with grout, walls are reinforced with shotcrete concrete or carbon strips and nets, arches and vaults are reinforced with carbon strips. Walls and floors are finished according to the original foundations.
